HOBBLED is a portrait of Brad Cameron and his beautiful four year old mule, “Concho” that I sculpted after catching a shot of Brad putting the hobbles on “Concho” at the horse trailer for the lunch break during a Mulemanship Clinic he presented in Shady Cove, OR. To this day, cowboys working on the open range train their horses and mules to stand hobbled when there is nothing to tie them to, so Brad hobbled “Concho” every time he left him as part of his training.
For this piece I was very fortunate that master-craftsman Bob Sharp was able mount him on a beautiful slab of curly maple that is shown in the raw in the photo with the clay work in progress. The reference photo also shows in that image. The fabricator at the foundry used my pink jeweler’s wax hobbles as his model in creating the metal hobbles.
